What ASIC’s Car Loan Review Means for Australian Buyers

Low advertised rates still need a full cost check before you sign

Australia’s car finance market is sending buyers two important messages at once.
Recent July rate snapshots show some secured car loans advertised from around the mid-five per cent range for strong-credit borrowers, suggesting competition is still alive for well-prepared applicants.
At the same time, ASIC’s 24 June 2026 review of motor vehicle finance has put the spotlight on fees, third-party sales channels and borrower outcomes.

The regulator reviewed more than 350,000 loans across eight car finance providers and found that the true cost of a loan can vary sharply depending on the lender, distributor and customer circumstances. In one example highlighted by ASIC, fees exceeded $9,000 on a loan just under $50,000. That is the kind of extra cost that can turn a seemingly competitive offer into an expensive commitment.

For everyday buyers, the lesson is not to avoid finance altogether. A car loan can still be a practical way to buy a safe, reliable vehicle for work, family and essential travel. The key is to compare the full structure, not just the interest rate. Establishment fees, monthly account fees, broker or dealer costs, early repayment rules and balloon payments can all change the real price you pay over the life of the loan.

This is especially important for used car buyers, self-employed applicants and borrowers with imperfect credit histories, who may be offered different rates or conditions. Before signing, ask for a written breakdown of all upfront and ongoing charges, check the comparison rate, and use a car loan repayment calculator to test whether repayments still fit your budget if your income changes or other household costs rise.

If you are arranging finance through a dealer or broker, it is reasonable to ask how they are paid, which lenders they considered, and whether any fees are negotiable. A transparent process should make it easier to understand why one loan is being recommended over another.

  • Compare the interest rate and the comparison rate.
  • Ask for every fee in writing before you apply.
  • Model repayments across several loan terms.
  • Be cautious with balloon payments that lower monthly costs but increase the final amount due.
  • Seek help early if repayments become difficult.

The broader message from ASIC’s review is simple: a low rate is only one part of a good car loan. The best outcome is finance that is affordable, clearly explained and suitable for the way you actually use your car.

Canstar’s latest personal loan coverage is a useful reminder for Australians planning a lifestyle purchase: the cheapest-looking loan is not always the lowest-cost option once fees, loan terms and repayment flexibility are considered. While the guidance is written for personal loans broadly, it has clear relevance for buyers considering jetski loans, especially when a personal watercraft is being financed outside a dedicated marine loan. - read more

Why ATO Interest Changes Matter for Small Business Finance
25 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Australian small businesses carrying tax debt face a sharper cash flow test as the after-tax cost of ATO interest becomes harder to absorb. From the 2025-26 income year, general interest charge and shortfall interest charge amounts incurred on tax debts are no longer deductible. For SMEs that have relied on payment plans as a temporary buffer, the change makes delayed tax payments more expensive in real terms. - read more

Why Towing Safety Should Shape Your Caravan Buying Budget
25 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent towing-safety coverage across Australia’s motoring media is a useful reminder that choosing a caravan is not only about layout, appliances and off-grid features. For buyers planning to finance a new or used van, the safety numbers can be just as important as the purchase price. A caravan that looks affordable on paper may still become a poor fit if it pushes a tow vehicle beyond its practical limits or forces costly upgrades after settlement. - read more
