What Australia’s Record EV Sales Mean for Your Next Car Loan

A faster-moving vehicle market is changing how buyers should think about repayments, value and loan structure

Australia’s new-car market has entered a very different phase, with June 2026 delivering the strongest monthly sales result on record and electric vehicles moving from niche consideration to mainstream choice.
The latest figures show more than 140,000 new vehicles delivered across the month, with battery-electric models accounting for almost one in four sales.
For car buyers, that is not just an automotive story.
It is a finance story.

When demand shifts this quickly, the way Australians assess a car loan also needs to shift. A buyer comparing a petrol SUV, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full EV is no longer simply choosing between badges or body styles. They are weighing upfront price, expected running costs, charging access, resale risk, tax treatment and loan term. That makes comparing finance options more important than relying on a single dealership offer.

The rise of brands such as BYD and Tesla is also increasing competition at the point of purchase. More models, sharper pricing and a wider spread of electric and hybrid choices can be good news for borrowers, but only if the finance is structured properly. A lower purchase price does not automatically mean a cheaper outcome if the rate, fees, balloon payment or loan term are poorly matched to the buyer’s budget.

For personal buyers, the key question is affordability over the whole ownership period. EVs may reduce fuel and servicing costs, but repayments still need to work under current household conditions, especially while interest rates remain elevated. Before committing, buyers should model repayments at different loan terms and consider whether a larger deposit, secured loan or shorter term improves the overall cost. A car loan calculator can help turn a tempting drive-away price into a clearer monthly budget.

For business owners and sole traders, the conversation can be even broader. Depending on how the vehicle is used, a chattel mortgage, commercial hire purchase or lease may be considered alongside standard finance. EVs can also raise questions about charging equipment, fringe benefits tax settings, depreciation and how much private use is expected. These details can materially change the real cost of a vehicle.

The message for 2026 is simple: vehicle choice is changing quickly, and finance decisions need to keep up. Record EV sales suggest more Australians are ready to rethink what they drive. The smartest buyers will also rethink how they fund it, comparing rates, loan features and total cost before signing.

Canstar’s latest personal loan coverage is a useful reminder for Australians planning a lifestyle purchase: the cheapest-looking loan is not always the lowest-cost option once fees, loan terms and repayment flexibility are considered. While the guidance is written for personal loans broadly, it has clear relevance for buyers considering jetski loans, especially when a personal watercraft is being financed outside a dedicated marine loan. - read more
Why ATO Interest Changes Matter for Small Business Finance
Why ATO Interest Changes Matter for Small Business Finance
25 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Australian small businesses carrying tax debt face a sharper cash flow test as the after-tax cost of ATO interest becomes harder to absorb. From the 2025-26 income year, general interest charge and shortfall interest charge amounts incurred on tax debts are no longer deductible. For SMEs that have relied on payment plans as a temporary buffer, the change makes delayed tax payments more expensive in real terms. - read more

Why Towing Safety Should Shape Your Caravan Buying Budget
25 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent towing-safety coverage across Australia’s motoring media is a useful reminder that choosing a caravan is not only about layout, appliances and off-grid features. For buyers planning to finance a new or used van, the safety numbers can be just as important as the purchase price. A caravan that looks affordable on paper may still become a poor fit if it pushes a tow vehicle beyond its practical limits or forces costly upgrades after settlement. - read more
